Our work in Madagascar
We aim to multiply our action across all the Western Indian Ocean region, starting with its biggest island: Madagascar.
Our purpose is to address the marine biodiversity crisis as a whole, by addressing both the environmental and the social aspects of a reef-restoration projects.
Madagascar
The 5th biggest island in the world hosts around 20% of African coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. This is why, appart from our founder’s story, Koraï is implemented in Madagascar. In the North-West a group of islands where we are growing and out-planting with the objectif of recovering coral reefs of the region.
1.5 billion people in Madagascar directly rely on coral reef for their livelihood, in an island surrounded by 2,000sqm of coral reef.

Our first projects are based in the archipelago of Nosy Be : with 10 islands, Nosy Be is not only the touristic capital of Madagascar, but also a marine biodiversity hotspot with a population living on touristic activities and fisheries.
We take you to discover the natural and human wealth that this corner of paradise, also called the “pearl of the Indian Ocean”, shelters.

We regenerate marine biodiversity
With our coral reef restoration program in the archipelago of Nosy Be, our objectif is to increase the reef coverage of 40% in the islands where we work, within 3 to 5 years, depending on our nursery sites.
Why? Madagascar is one of the biggest reef hotspot of the Western Indian Ocean and have suffered several bleaching events: the latest has occurred in 2024. Nosy Be’s coral reef are resilient, but need a boost to recover and protection to prevent human degradation due to fishery and tourism.
How? Our scientific team have selected relevant and impactful sites in areas protected and managed by local communities. We adapt our restoring techniques to the local realities.
We trust science.
Environmental engineering is a delicate matter: we work with the best reef specialists.
We believe in humans.
Supported by fishermen’s associations and local communities, Koraï finds its roots in the people.
We support capacity building.
Raising awareness among the youngest and the oldest is necessary to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.
Let’s do it together.
